NAFDAC secures conviction of Akinsanya for re-bagging Dangote sugar

FRN – VS – ESTHER O. AKINSANYA

(CASE OF REBAGGING DANGOTE SUGAR)

 

Mrs. Esther O. Akinsanya who is standing trial at the Federal High Court, Lagos in a Six Count Charge, Viz:

 

COUNT 1: Importation of Unwholesome Aqucar Crystal Sugar contrary to counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Food (miscellaneous provisions (Act, Cap C 34, LFN 2004).

 

COUNT 2: Possession of Unwholesome Aqucar Crystal Sugar contrary to the provisions of  counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Food (miscellaneous provisions(, Act, Cap C 34, LFN 2004).

 

COUNT 3: Packaging of various brands of Unregistered Aqucar Crystal Sugar into Dangote granulated sugar bags in a manner that is false contrary to the provisions of Food & Drugs Act Cap F.32 LFN 2004.

 

COUNT 4: Sell of Aqucar Crystal Sugar in a manner that is likely to create wrong impression as to its value contrary to the provisions of Food & Drugs Act, Cap F.32 LFN 2004.

 

COUNT 5: Importation of Aqucar Crystal Sugar without registration, contrary to the provisions of Foods, Drugs and related products (Registration etc) Act Cap F33 LFN 2004.

 

COUNT 6: Importation of Aqucar Crystal Sugar which is not fortified with Vitamin A, Contrary to the provisions of Food fortification with Vitamin A regulations, 2005.

 

The accused changed her plea from NOT GUILTY to GUILTY and the Court imposed fine of N1,300,000.00 on the accused and ordered that the convict  forfeits the over 1000 bags of the violative products to NAFDAC for Destruction.

 

The Convict was remanded pending payment of the fine.
